Rosie Allen-Herring [More Info]

Rosie Allen-Herring is a national expert on public private partnerships, philanthropy and business strategy. She currently serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of United Way of the National Capital Area (United Way NCA). Rosie is recognized as a thought leader who demonstrates the ability to convene public private entities, to leverage talent and resources and create collective impact in communities across the region and beyond. Rosie has more than 25 years of experience in the areas of corporate finance, strategic leadership, public and private partnerships, corporate philanthropy and community investment. Formerly, Rosie was the Managing Director of the Community Investment and Engagement Division at Fannie Mae. In that role, she led Fannie Mae’s corporate philanthropic strategy, and oversaw the organization’s social responsibility investments and employee engagement efforts nationwide. Prior to Managing Director at Fannie Mae, she served as the National Regulatory Compliance Manager, Housing & Community Development. She was also the Senior Deputy Director, Washington, DC Community Business Center. Rosie developed, implemented and managed key business strategies for the Washington Metropolitan area, resulting in investments of more than $2 billion in the region. Rosie holds key leadership roles with several business and civic organizations, including serving on the Board of Directors for the Greater Washington Board of Trade, MedStar Health, Inc., District of Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Washington Area Women’s Foundation, Girl Scouts Council of the Nation’s Capital; Board of Trustees at A.T. Still University, Prince George’s Community College Foundation and several additional organizations. She also served as a board member for Washington’s exploratory Olympic committee, Washington 2024. She earned a B.A. in Economics from Howard University, an M.B.A. from Strayer University and was an International Fellow of the United States-Southern Africa Center for Leadership and Public Values at the University of Cape Town (SA) Graduate School of Business and Duke University Graduate School of Public Policy. She is also a graduate of the Harvard Business School’s Strategic Perspectives in Non-profit Management Program. In 2013 she founded Seam Innovation, a strategic advising practice that provides innovation design and planning, management and executive leadership advising services to for-profit and non-profit organizations and executive leaders. She featured in several books on leadership including, The Starfish and the Spider, The Ultimate Board Member’s Book, Facilitators Guide to Participatory Leadership, and Creating A Culture of Collaboration. As the CEO of Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin for nine years, she transformed Goodwill’s brand, doubled its revenues and focused its mission on restorative and environmental justice, through a diversity, equity and inclusion framework. She partnered with the now Senator Kamala Harris to launch Back on Track, a national model for adjudicated youth. She had a successful 11-year career in health care serving as the Assistant Director of Budget and Planning for the San Francisco Department of Public Health.

A principal of HCM Strategists’ higher education team, Dr. Toya Barnes-Teamer provides expertise in state and system-level higher education research, policy and cross sector collaboration. Dr. Barnes-Teamer brings more than 25 years of experience in higher education administration, most recently as vice president for student success at Dillard University (LA) where she coordinated the planning, development, organization and administration of the university's governing policies with the executive cabinet. She was also responsible for the development of the enrollment management plan at the university, as well as the university’s retention initiatives. Previously, Dr. Barnes-Teamer served as senior vice president for academic and student affairs for the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS), after serving as vice chancellor/provost for Louisiana Technical College, District One. Prior to her tenure at LCTCS, Dr. Barnes-Teamer was associate director of admissions for recruitment and enrollment management at the University of New Orleans (LA) and associate director of admissions at Loyola University (LA). Toya holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Loyola University and received her PhD in higher education administration from the University of New Orleans.

Mercy Family Center
Laura Danna, LCSW-BACS is a licensed clinical social worker at Mercy Family Center and the Project Director of Project Fleur-de-lis, an intermediate and long-term school-based mental health service model which serves over 60 New Orleans area schools that functions as a Category III service site within the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN). She received her master’s degree in social work from the University of Texas in Austin and has worked for almost 15 years in schools. She is a certified trainer in the NASP PREPaRE’s School Crisis Prevention and Intervention model and in Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) and serves as the Co-Chair of the NCTSN Schools Committee. She is a faculty member of the New Orleans Trauma-Informed Schools Learning Collaborative and is working as a consultant on a current grant funded by the National Institute of Justice to determine whether a multi-component implementation strategy for trauma-informed schools improves school safety by aligning staff attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors with a trauma-informed approach.

Keisha was appointed to CEO in January 2018 after serving as the Director of Community Giving & Marketing since 2012. Prior to relocating to Santa Cruz, Keisha served two years as the Director of Resource Development with Trident United Way in Charleston, South Carolina. In her short tenure as CEO, Keisha prioritized equity and partnered with staff to bring residents into the work, pairing the data with the concerns and needs voiced by community members to the table and having their voice carry the same weight as what we see in the data. Designing a participatory grantmaking model is gaining interest of foundations and local donors as United Way is truly serving as a convener and backbone support organization. Keisha is a graduate of the prestigious United Way Worldwide Advanced Leadership Program and continues to participate in LEAD. In addition, she recently earned certification from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business Executive Education Program for Nonprofit Leaders. Keisha started her career in nonprofits as an executive leader in resource development, program design, and product sales with several Girl Scout Councils throughout the nation. She then joined a design team with Mayor David Ciciline (currently Congressman) in Providence, Rhode Island that created the nation’s first citywide system for after school programs, the Providence After School Alliance/AfterZone. Dr. Rebekah Gee is the Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health, the state’s largest agency with a budget of $14 billion. Her oversight responsibilities include public health and other direct service programs for citizens in need such as behavioral health, developmental disabilities, aging and adult services, emergency preparedness, and the Medicaid program. Under Dr. Gee’s leadership, over 480,000 Louisianans are newly insured under Louisiana’s Medicaid Expansion, and for the first time, many are receiving much needed primary and preventive health care. Dr. Gee is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist and brings a caregivers’ perspective to the people she serves. In her current role she has led national discussions on the negative public health impact of high drug prices. Her efforts began with the prices of drugs that cure Hepatitis C, the leading infectious disease killer in the United States. Her efforts have resulted in the first state based subscription purchasing model and elimination campaign. Dr. Gee is also a trained policy expert who has served in numerous state and national policy roles and in 2017 she was elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Prior to her role as Secretary, Dr. Gee served as the director for the Birth Outcomes Initiative where she led the charge to decrease infant mortality and prematurity statewide – an effort that in part led to a 25% reduction in infant mortality, an 85% drop in elective deliveries before 39 weeks and a 10% drop in NICU admissions statewide. She is the mother of five energetic children and lives in New Orleans where she continues to see patients.

Rashida Govan is an educator, activist and writer who has worked for more than 20 years in education and youth development. Rashida is a graduate of the University of New Orleans where she earned her Ph.D. in educational administration. She completed a postdoctoral position as project director of the International Study on Youth Community Organizing. Her other research interests include African American girls’ adolescent development and college readiness, access and success. Rashida is deeply engaged in the New Orleans community and is credited with facilitating a number of community education programs including parent leadership trainings with the Fatherhood Consortium and the PRIDE Parent Leadership Academy, the Trayvon Martin Teach-In and the Assata Shakur Teach-In. She has published numerous reports and publications on family engagement, youth leadership, youth organizing, educational equity, public policy and other related topics. Govan is the founder and executive director of Project Butterfly New Orleans, an evidence-based, African-centered girls rites of passage program that has served over 200 high school girls since its inception in 2009. Rashida also has spoken nationally on hip hop culture and has spoken widely on issues concerning girls and women, and a wide range of social and healing justice issues. She started with United Way of Racine County in 2011, and over the last six years has held the title of Manager of Investor Relations and Vice President of Investor Relations. Her natural God-given skills were enhanced even more with her stint on the hit show The Voice. Making it all the way to the Live Playoffs with the top 24, Tish was mentored and praised by some of the top industry idols. Being on the show pushed her to new heights in performing, though she was no stranger to the stage. Prior to appearing on The Voice Tish was already a highly sought after vocalist. Known for her mezzo-soprano voice she sang background for KeKe Wyatt, Byron Cage, Syleena Johnson, Mary Mary, and country music superstar Trace Adkins, just to name a few. Some of her local accolades include singing the National Anthem for the St. Louis Blues and the former St. Louis Rams, serenading crowds of over 7,000 at Twilight Tuesday, and serving as a background vocalist for several plays at the Fabulous Fox Theatre. Also, no stranger to national competitions Tish was selected as a contestant to perform with the “Showtime at The Apollo Tour” in 2005. Two years in a row she was voted into the top ten finalists in the Annual Kraft Gospel Talent Search. In 2011 she was selected as a finalist for the Budweiser Opening Act Competition. Outside of the 18 years Tish has been a professional singer, she has been singing ever since she could talk. Tish is the youngest of three daughters born to the late Reverend John W. Haynes and Mrs. Beatrice Haynes. As a proud native, Tish still lives in St. Louis, MO with her loving family. Currently, Tish can be found working on her EP and fielding performance requests. In June 2018 Jennifer moved to Cincinnati, OH where she serves as Vice President, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the United Way of Greater Cincinnati (UWGC). Prior to joining the team at UWGC, Jennifer served as Program Director in the Office of Diversity & Inclusion at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN; which was recently ranked the number one healthcare organization in the world. She is a passionate leader with an energetic presence possessing over a decade of progressive healthcare experience. Jennifer has demonstrated success in bringing together leadership and key stakeholders to advance strategies around diversity, equity and inclusion. Throughout her career, Jennifer has been the recipient of several awards and accolades. Most recently she was recognized by DiversityMBA, a national leadership organization integrating diversity and inclusion with talent management, as a 2018 Top 100 Under 50 Emerging Executive Leader. Mary Claire has over forty years of professional management experience providing visionary leadership and optimizing individual and organizational performance. She is a licensed clinical social worker with a Masters of Social Work from Tulane University and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of New Orleans. From 2003 to 2012 she served as the Director of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services for Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans. In 2007 she created the New Orleans Family Justice Center, a comprehensive victim services center and since July of 2012 serves as its Executive Director under the 501c3, the New Orleans Family Justice Alliance. Yodit Mesfin Johnson has been addressing issues of diversity and social justice for nearly two decades first as an activist and more recently as a trainer, consultant, facilitator, and speaker. Her extensive and varied background enables her to bring a range of skills and perspectives to meet the needs of her clients. She has worked with numerous organizations, non-profit agencies, community groups, schools and Universities to create environments that allow all people to feel valued, to be treated fairly, and to work together productively. Recently, she has been facilitating groups for community members to explore race, racism and implicit bias. As a champion for equity and social justice, she has coached and trained hundreds of corporate and nonprofit leaders throughout the country who are interested in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in their organizations. Recent clients include Ford Motor Company's NextGen Leaders program, Ann Arbor Public Schools, The University of Michigan and United Way. Yodit also serves as Chief Operating Officer and Lead Diversity Coach for Nonprofit Enterprise at Work (NEW), a nonprofit capacity building and support organization that serves charitable, education, municipal and healthcare organizations in southeast Michigan. She recently founded Black Men Read, an inclusive literacy initiative for elementary aged students in Michigan.

Chris Preston, Vice President, Corporate Relations, United Way Worldwide brings a strong commitment to and understanding of United Way’s mission and work as he has been part of the United Way network for 17 years. Chris oversees the Global Corporate Leadership Program which consists of over 90 corporate partners that raised a combined total of $1 billion for United Ways in communities around the globe and provides support to local United Ways in their overall fundraising efforts as part of the $4.6 billion United Way network. Chris spent the first 11 years of his United Way career at United Way Worldwide with roles as National Sales Manager of the United Way Store and Corporate Relations Manager for the Global Corporate Leadership team. In addition to those roles, he was Resource Development liaison for United Way Worldwide’s Africa Region, convener for the Young Leaders Business Resource Group of United Way Worldwide’s Diversity & Inclusion Council, and Project Manager for the Network Engagement and Support Team Committee for United Way’s U.S. Task Force on Economic Model & Growth. Prior to his return to United Way Worldwide, Chris served two local United Ways. First, as the Senior Vice President, Strategic and Regional Management at United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. In that role, Chris assumed Chief of Staff duties and was responsible for the management and execution of United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey’s organizational strategies across the region. Chris also served as Vice President, Resource Development, at United Way of the National Capital Area in Washington, DC. In that role he led the development team in managing a $33 million annual fundraising effort.

Interaction Institute for Social Change
Cynthia Silva Parker has been a Senior Associate at the Interaction Institute for Social Change since 1998. She builds the collaborative capacity of individuals, organizations and networks through training, strategic planning with an equity lens, consulting, coaching, and facilitation services. She works with organizations and networks in the nonprofit, community, public, and philanthropic sectors. In addition, she has led or co-led the development of several IISC workshops, including Advancing Racial Justice in your Organization, The Fundamentals of Facilitation for Racial Justice Work, Collaborative Social Change, and Diversity in the Collaborative Organization. Prior leadership experience includes directing Ten Point Coalition’s Boston Freedom Summer project (a faith-based leadership and community development initiative), and serving as Project Administrator for the Algebra Project (a civil rights organization focused on access to algebra for all students). Cynthia holds a BA from Harvard-Radcliffe Colleges and Master of Public Policy from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. A sampling of equity-focused projects included: • Annie E. Casey Foundation - a variety of processes to operationalize racial equity in foundation practices and programming • Centering Healthcare Institute - designing an equity, diversity, and inclusion planning process • Communities in Schools - designing and facilitating a planning process focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion • Education Funders Strategy Group - facilitating and co-facilitating a variety of learning sessions on race and educational equity • Federal Reserve Bank of Boston - facilitated 15 month learning community focused on understanding causes of the racial wealth divide and identifying policy and practice solutions • Kresge Foundation - facilitating workshops in their Fostering Urban Equitable Leadership program for grantees • New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene - a variety of consulting and training activities in support of the Race to Justice initiative • United Way Worldwide - training and consulting to support the development of a race equity toolkit for local United Ways and to operationalize race, equity, and inclusion within the national organization.

Pamela Smith has been the President/CEO of the United Way of Washtenaw County since 2012. As a nonprofit executive she is dedicated to strengthening the community through philanthropy, collaboration and community engagement. Her vision and leadership guides the Equity, Diversity and Justice work of the United Way of Washtenaw County. She has more than 25 years of experience in Management, Communications and Nonprofit administration. She has served on local nonprofit boards, as a UM guest lecturer, and on local advisory teams. Ms. Smith has extensive experience in marketing, training and workforce development. Her development and fundraising skills have made her keenly aware of the intricate balance of the diverse needs within the Southeastern Michigan community.

Daryle W. Unseld Jr. serves as the Chief Equity Officer for Metro United Way - charged with providing executive leadership, strategy development, planning, execution and accountability for Metro United Way’s focus on internal and external equity, diversity and inclusion. Prior to his service at Metro United Way, the 11-year U.S. Air Force veteran held positions in Louisville Metro Government and the YMCA of Greater Louisville. Daryle earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Louisville, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Saint Leo University and a Certificate in Nonprofit Executive Leadership from Indiana University. Daryle is a member of numerous civic and professional organizations including, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc, 100 Black Men of Louisville, the National Black MBA Association, and Louisville Chapter of the NAACP. He currently serves on the governing boards of the West Louisville Performing Arts Academy and the 15,000 Degrees Steering Committee. He was selected as a 2015-16 Association of Black Foundation Executives (ABFE), Connecting Leaders Fellow, 2018 Leadership Louisville Bingham Fellow and 2019 BMe Vanguard Fellow. He and his wife Cecily are proud parents of two daughters, Jasmyne and Natalia.

Edgar Villanueva is a globally-recognized expert on social justice philanthropy. Edgar serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of Native Americans in Philanthropy and is a Board Member of the Andrus Family Fund, a national foundation that works to improve outcomes for vulnerable youth. Edgar is a currently serves as Vice President of Programs and Advocacy at the Schott Foundation for Public Education where he oversees grant investment and capacity building supports for education justice campaigns across the United States. Edgar previously held leadership roles at Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust in North Carolina and at the Marguerite Casey Foundation in Seattle. Edgar is the author of Decolonizing Wealth, a bestselling book offering hopeful and compelling alternatives to the dynamics of colonization in the philanthropic and social finance sectors. In addition to working in philanthropy for many years, he has consulted with numerous nonprofit organizations and national and global philanthropies on advancing racial equity inside of their institutions and through their investment strategies. Edgar holds two degrees from the Gillings Global School of Public Health at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Edgar is an enrolled member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and resides in Brooklyn, NY.

Linda is the executive director of Fund II Foundation, founded by Robert F. Smith, businessman, and philanthropist. Fund II is a holistic organization for preserving the African-American experience; protecting human rights; providing music education; preserving the environment while promoting the benefits of the outdoors; and perpetuating American opportunity. Fund II has several initiatives: Restoration Retreat for black boys and girls, the Cradle to Greatness which tracks grantees as they ensure black and brown people move toward prosperity and happiness. InternX.org is newly designed to match culturally aware companies with 1000 overlooked students this year and 10,000 next year. Fund II is devoted to authentic collaborations, metrics off the chart and transformative scalability and sustainability. It has awarded over $250MM in just 4 years. A human rights activist and consultant for decades, Linda has worked with diverse groups of all ages, in education, engineering, government, media, politics, big business, not-for-profits, and grassroots Tough conversations do not frighten her—working with police and returning citizens, city leaders and displaced residents, religious and cultural opponents, all to build bridges. Before Fund II, she was diversity and inclusion vice president at a global engineering company, winning awards for its internship program. She worked with historically black universities, multicultural programs, and associations both devoted to and devoid of diversity. Authentic communication and collaboration are her passions; they represent love in action. As an ordained interfaith minister, she provides workshops to anyone who wants to improve their lives. She helps dying people and their families. She is one of Al Gore’s soldiers against climate change. She is a wife, mother of 3, grandmother of 5, and great grandmother of one.

Barron Witherspoon, Sr. is P&G's Global VP for Industry Affairs & Corporate Race Initiative. In Industry Affairs, he leads the company's external interface with trade associations & thought leaders impacting public policy, industry standards. Recently tapped as executive leader for the Corporate Race Initiative, his role is to build a coalition to "define, declare and demonstrate the specific role corporations should play in improving racial equity in America." He is located at P&G's Cincinnati, Ohio Headquarters. Previously, he was VP Global Operations for Strategic Revenue & Pricing Management where he worked across all business units and markets to develop and implement topline growth strategies. Prior to this, he was VP and General Manager for P&G's Asia business, responsible for all customer-facing operations in Southeast Asia, Australasia, India (and later Korea and Japan). Based in Singapore, he led P&G's business in a massive trading environment with the highest store concentration in the world. His region spanned 13 time zones & served 1/3 of the world's consumers. Prior to this assignment, he led the company's global Paper Products business with Walmart, P&G's largest customer. Mr. Witherspoon joined P&G's general advertising department in 1985 and held numerous line and staff positions in Marketing, Finance and Sales. He was a college exchange student in Konstanz, Germany and has earned degrees in Education from Eastern Florida State College and in Economics from Tuskegee University where he graduated cum laude. Trained for ministry at Cincinnati Bible Seminary, he is licensed & ordained. His board-level community service includes: chairman, INROADS National Board and member of Tuskegee University's Board of Trustees. His industry board work includes: cochair, E2E Value Chain Pillar of Consumer Goods Forum, Board Committee for Standards at GS1 and past Chairman of ECR Asia Pacific. He is also a member of The Executive Leadership Council.
